My Why

Start With Why

Simon Sinek says "Every one of us has a WHY, a deep-seated purpose, cause or belief that is the source of our passion and inspiration...all of us deserve waking up inspired to go to work and coming home, at the end of the day, feeling fulfilled by the work we do.

Fulfillment isn't another word for happiness. All kinds of things make us happy at work: hitting a goal, getting a promotion, landing a new client, completing a project---the list goes on. But happiness is temporary; the feeling doesn't last. Nobody walks around energized by the memory of a goal hit twelve months ago. That intensity passes with time.

Fulfillment is deeper. Fulfillment lasts. The difference between happiness and fulfillment is the difference between liking something and loving something.

...We don't necessarily find happiness in our jobs every day, but we can feel fulfilled by our work every day if it makes us feel part of something bigger than ourselves.

...Happiness comes from what we do. Fulfillment comes from why we do it.

If we want to feel an undying passion for our work, if we want to feel we are contributing to something bigger than ourselves, we all need to know our WHY."

Finding My WHY

A couple of years ago, I read Simon Sinek's book Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action. I was so inspired by this book that I immediately purchased the guide titled Find Your WHY. I partnered up with my husband, and he spent hours guiding me through the steps of this work so that I could arrive at my personal WHY. The work required me to dig deep into memories of the past---happy ones, sad ones, and even painful ones. But they allowed me to discover the deep-seated purpose I have always had in my work as a teacher and an instructional coach. The work has always been fun for me, so the pockets of happiness have always been present. The fulfillment--the source of my passion--however, has always been about helping students and teachers discover gifts that are unique to them and that they often do not even know they have. And because I have been witness to the impact that these undiscovered gifts have made once they are released---it is my dream to dedicate the rest of my life's work to my WHY.

My note to you: You have an obligation to the world to find your own fulfillment, gifts, and passion because there is no one else in the world exactly like you--with your gifts, with your thoughts, and with your heart.
