Frequently Asked Questions

What makes this coaching support different?

What makes my coaching support different is that although I am well-versed in multiple coaching approaches, I utilize those approaches as tools rather than as sets of pre-defined parameters for our coaching partnership. The coaching partnership will always remain centered on the teacher’s gifts, goals, and the solutions they are seeking. The teacher leads the way.

What do you mean you will help me find my gifts?

I believe that all educators possess natural gifts that should be nurtured. I also believe, however, that there are gifts that sometimes remain dormant and go unidentified for a teacher because the daily work of preparation and teaching does not allow time for finding what might be hidden. Just like teachers help their students discover their natural gifts and talents, I help teachers discover theirs.

Why should I try a coaching session with you?

I believe that enrolling in an instructional coaching partnership with me will be an investment you make in yourself. As teachers, we spend hundreds of dollars on resources we find online and on trips to the teacher stores. While many of these resources can prove to be helpful in the moment, they only provide temporary solutions. We waste our money away on resources that do not contribute to enhancing our teaching craft. By enlisting in an instructional coaching partnership with me, you get to decide it all! You decide what you want to learn, what areas of your craft you might want to improve, or what solutions you may need help finding.

Do you coach teachers in all subject areas?

Although many schools/districts provide content instructional coaches to support teachers with content learning, instructional coaching is actually about instruction–regardless of subject area. Although my content strength are literacy and classroom management, I invite you to give this a try if you are seeking instructional support and not specifically content learning support. If you are seeking specific content learning support, please reach out, as I work with independent contractors who may be able to provide the help you need. If you aren’t sure or would like to know more, send me an email at mayra@mayrasabell.com and we can figure it out together!

What if I book a session and it doesn’t help me

My main goal (my WHY) is to empower you because I believe that there is no other person or teacher in this world exactly like you. Because I believe that, I am here to serve you, support you, encourage you and inspire you. If you don’t walk away feeling served, supported, encouraged, or inspired, then I am not fulfilling my WHY. Therefore, I am happy to refund your session fee, and I will still always be cheering you on!

Are your coaching sessions always virtual?

Over the course of the Covid-19 pandemic, we were all forced into adapting to systems and approaches that were not the norm. The tool most utilized by all was the virtual meeting setting. Although a virtual meeting cannot ever replace face to face interaction, I learned that quality connections can still be made over the virtual platform. I also learned that this tool also proved to be beneficial in many ways. By utilizing a virtual platform, I am able to provide clients affordable session costs due to having no travel costs and no need for securing a meeting place. This platform also allows clients the opportunity to book a meeting when the need arises rather than weeks in advance. I also really love the the idea of our coaching conversations taking place from the comfort of a home so that they are relaxed and pressure-free. I want my conversations with you to lead to a long-term partnership, and I believe this tool provides us with the conditions to achieve that.

 Do you offer professional development?

Yes! Currently my  focus is on being very tailored to the teacher, so professional learning opportunities will be created specifically for what the teacher wants to learn. The teacher will decide the topic and length of session based on my current hourly rates. I also hope to provide some future virtual learning conferences, so stay tuned for those as well! If you are seeking help for your school or district, I can work with you to tailor a plan that will meet your needs.

Why did your company choose the word uncommon to describe its coaching?

Years of experience and listening to what teachers truly need has taught me that what is most important in any coaching partnership is CHOICE and genuine relationships. Because of this, I structured my company around this repetitive message I heard among teachers in almost 10 years of real-world instructional coaching. I think my approach is uncommon because I allow the professional (the teacher) to determine every component of the coaching process. While instructional coaching in any form can be proven to be beneficial, I want the coaching process to reflect what the professionals who are living and surviving the day to day demands of teaching have been telling me for 10 years. Just like students thrive under the care of the teacher who builds a genuine relationship with them, allows them choice in the learning approach, and listens to them, I believe that teachers can only strengthen their craft when they are provided with the same conditions. Once you enlist in coaching support with me, it is my hope you will see my approach as uncommon as well. It is my goal to be different, and I plan on always being different by always listening to the voices of teachers.
